08 May Supporting our Community and the Environment!
Allendale Co-operative introduced a 5p charge for disposable carrier bags on 1st October 2016. The Board of Directors hoped that introducing a charge may help reduce the number of bags sold and encourage our customers to re-use bags. We decided to donate this revenue to local groups for the benefit of our community.
A new group will be chosen each quarter and the first beneficiary chosen was Allendale Lunch Club. The Lunch Club runs in the Village Hall from 10am on Thursdays and includes a chair based exercise class. Volunteers from Age UK Northumberland organise this weekly event and they are always looking for new helpers (tel: 01670 784800) – many hands make light work!
This valuable community event is much appreciated by the, mainly women and gentlemen who attend. Good company and great value for money; with a two-course lunch for just £5.50! Allendale Co-op were pleased to donate a cheque for £331.05 to the Lunch Club to help them continue to provide a wonderful service to our community. The new chosen group to benefit from this quarters disposable bag sales is Allendale Youth Club.
We do hope that customers appreciate the reasoning behind the bag charge and will continue to support us in our efforts to reduce bag sales and hence protect the environment and wildlife from the consequences of the over use of disposable bags.
